Once Upon a Rasa: A Cooperative Card Game for Connection

Alongside our movement and coaching work, we’ve also been developing a new game called Once Upon a Rasa—a cooperative card game co-created with Chris Hudson, the Vice President of the Board for Moving Rasa Possibilities. Chris is the founder and director of Camp Highlights and a nationally recognized advocate for LGBTQ people of color, ensuring that youth have access to inclusive and affirming camp experiences. He also happens to be an avid designer of board games and Dungeons & Dragons!

So, when I shared the idea for Once Upon a Rasa, he jumped right in.

Together, we’ve tested several versions of the game—with my family (including my 12-year-old son and partner), with each other, and at Moving Rasa community gatherings like our First Saturdays at the Indonesian Food Bazaar. Each playtest has shown us how story, movement, and imagination can weave people together to explore culture and creativity in novel ways.

This November, we’re bringing Once Upon a Rasa to the community members of WomanKind, where we’ll introduce the game to survivors of sexual assault. We’re excited for this to be a space where participants can connect to storytelling beyond words—using play, gesture, and collective imagination to share their inner landscapes across cultural differences.
